Who is Eligible for Bariatric Surgery?
The NIH Consensus Panel recommends that:
- Patients must have failed previous weight-loss program and
- Have a Body Mass Index > 40 kg/m2 or
- Have a Body Mass Index between 35 and 40 kg/m2 with significant co-morbid Illnesses
Over 10 Million People Meet These Criteria in the USA
In the United States, morbid obesity is common, affecting more than 7% of women and nearly 5% of men. Overall - 5% of the US adult population (over 10 million people) meet these criteria.
Exclusion Criteria:
- Obesity related to a metabolic or endocrine disorder
- A history of substance abuse or untreated, major psychiatric disease
- When surgery contraindicated or high risk
- If a candidate wants to become pregnant within 18 months after surgery
